English Diagnostic Assessments
Pass Functional Skills offers two main types of diagnostic tests for English: the initial assessment and the subject knowledge assessment. Let’s explore each in detail:
Initial Assessment
The initial assessment provides a comprehensive evaluation of a learner’s starting point. It includes questions on various topics with different levels of difficulty. Each question is weighted based on its complexity and topic difficulty. By analysing the number of correct answers and their weightings, a learner’s initial level is determined. Further, this valuable insight helps recommend the appropriate course to enrol on.
Subject Knowledge Assessment
In addition to the initial assessment, learners can take the the subject knowledge assessment. This provides them with further insight into their staring point on the course. This diagnostic test assesses learners’ understanding across the entire English course, highlighting areas that need improvement. When completed, you will receive a list of recommended topics to focus your revision on, aiding in passing the exam on the first attempt.
Current Level
As learners progress through the course, their current level will adjust when completing practice questions and topic tests. The current level metric provides immediate feedback on progress. When a learner’s current level goes above 2.5, they are usually ready to take their level 2 exam.
ESFA Funding
It is an ESFA requirement to carry out an assessment of current level for those apprentices who do not have evidence of prior attainment of level 2 maths and English qualifications. These assessments must be carried out using tools based on the national literacy and numeracy standards and core curriculum, as stated by the ESFA funding rules. The Pass Functional Skills diagnostics tests help training providers to meet these requirements without incurring any cost.
Conclusion
While the initial assessment suggests a level of study for learners, this does not mean you cannot take a higher level. For example, you are advised to take the level 1 English course but need the level 2 qualification. In this case, we recommend that you spend more time using the course to ensure you are as prepared as you can be for the exam.
