Apprenticeship Functional Skills
Introduction
When considering an apprenticeship, it’s essential to understand the significance of functional skills. Currently, apprentices must hold at least a level 2 qualification in both maths and English. You can check the government website for specific requirements. This underscores the crucial link between apprenticeships and functional skills. Many apprentices work on their functional skills alongside their apprenticeship. Depending on your situation, your apprenticeship provider may offer functional skills courses, or you might need to pursue them independently. You may also be eligible for funding.

Apprenticeship Functional Skills
What are functional skills?
Functional skills are qualifications in maths and English that demonstrate an individual’s proficiency in essential skills needed for employment, education and everyday life. These skills enable learners to communicate effectively, make informed decisions and solve problems. A level 2 functional skills qualification is equivalent to a grade 4/C at GCSE.
Maths Functional Skills
To earn your maths functional skills qualification, you must complete a 2-hour online exam. The exam is split into two parts: a 30 minute non-calculator section and a 90 minute calculator section. When you have passed, you will receive an e-certificate and physical copy, which is necessary to complete your apprenticeship.
English Functional Skills
For English, you must pass all three components to obtain your functional skills qualification. These components – reading, writing, and the SLC (speaking, listening and communication) – are assessed through separate exams. The reading and writing are each one hour long and are usually taken together in one exam slot. The SLC is sat on a separate day and lasts around 2 hours, unlike the other exams you will be on a call with other learners. You need to pass all components to achieve the full qualification.
Completing Your Apprenticeship
Achieving functional skills is crucial for those pursuing apprenticeships. Without at least a level 2 in maths and English, you cannot complete your qualification. Therefore, it is vital to consider this requirement.
Functional Skills and Apprenticeships
Given the interdependency between apprenticeships and functional skills, Pass Functional Skills specialises in assisting learners who are completing both simultaneously. Their website offers numerous resources to aid in revision, whether you have already identified a specific apprenticeship or are still exploring options. Starting your functional skills early can facilitate a smoother transition into your apprenticeship. While it is possible to work on both at the same time, managing the workload can be challenging. Therefore, you might find it easier to attain your maths and English qualifications before beginning your apprenticeship.
