Is the GCSE English equivalency exam online?
The online test is straightforward. You'll take your GCSE English equivalency test from the comfort of home, with an invigilator joining you remotely via a Google Meets link, which they'll use to share the exam system. You'll read the questions on-screen, then choose to type your answers or handwrite them, scanning any paper answers in at the end. No technical knowledge is needed for this equivalency testing, just a stable internet connection and a webcam.
Will my training providers accept this qualification?
A Star Equivalency has been delivering equivalency testing since 2002, and their qualifications are accepted by the majority of training providers across the UK. This includes those offering GCSE equivalency tests for teacher training routes such as PGCE, SCITT and School Direct. Entry Requirements

Technical Setup
Please make sure that you have access to the following to be able to sit your GCSE equivalency test online:
- A laptop, Mac, or Windows PC
- A webcam and Microphone, either external or built-in. These must be set up and tested prior to the exam.
- A strong Wi-Fi connection which will sustain a video call.
- A pen and paper
- A smartphone so that you can scan in any written answers at the end of the exam (this must not be within your reach during the exam).
Exam day setup
On the day of the GCSE equivalency test , you must make sure that you are in a location where you will not be disturbed. You must show your remote invigilator a valid form of Photo ID.
When can I sit my exam?
The GCSE equivalency test can be taken year round, 6 days a week, including on Saturdays.
How long before I get my results?
We will email your results to you within 10 working days of when you took you exam. If you need access to your results faster than this you can choose our fast track option. This will provide you with your results up to 2 working days after the day of you exam.
What does the GCSE English equivalency exam consist of?
The English equivalency test consists of:
- One 2-hour and 10 minute paper, split into reading and writing sections.

The A Star Equivalency test is recognised by the majority of training providers across the UK, including those with specific teacher training GCSE requirements. A Star Equivalency has been delivering equivalency testing since 2002, with over 10,000 students passed and a 4.8 star rating.
No Entry Requirements
The GCSE English equivalency qualification is accessible to learners of all ages, with no prior entry requirements needed. As long as you have a strong internet connection and a PC, laptop or Mac with a webcam, you are able to sit the exam. You can check the GCSEs needed to become a teacher or the GCSEs needed for university to confirm this exam meets your requirements.
Course Option
You can choose an Exam and Course option to help you prepare and pass on the first attempt. The online course for 2026/27 includes multimedia learning resources, full past papers, AI marking and progress tracking, giving you everything you need to revise at your own pace. A Premium Bundle is also available, which includes 12 months of course access and a free resit if needed.
Certification Provided
You will receive an official certificate from A Star Equivalency when you pass your GCSE English equivalency test. The exam is 2 hours 10 minutes long and marked out of 100, split into a 60-mark reading section and a 40-mark writing section. A grade 4 (C) or above requires a score of 48/100 or more, though training providers in Wales may require a grade 6 (equivalent to an old B grade).

Is this a full GCSE English equivalent?
Yes, A Star Equivalency’s English test follows the AQA English Language GCSE specification. It is accepted by the majority of training providers in the country.
What format does the GCSE English equivalency exam take?
You will take your exam through an online platform, you will see the questions on your screen, and you can either type in your answers, or write them out on paper and scan them in at the end.
Approximately 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time of your exam you will be emailed a link to a Google Meets video call, where your remote invigilator will do some pre-exam checks, and go through all the instructions with you.
Your exam will take the form of one 2-hour and 10 minute long paper.
Who is this English Language equivalency test for?
If you need a GCSE English equivalent grade 4 or higher for your training provider, then this exam will be suitable for you. It is accessible, and flexible. It can be taken online and at many dates throughout the year.
Will my English equivalency qualification be accepted by my training provider?
For many years A Star Exams have been recognised by the majority of UK-based training providers. However, you should always double check with your provider first, as they may be one of the few who do not recognise these qualifications.

What do I need on the day of my exam?
The following is a list of things you will need on the day of your exam:
- An internet connection capable of sustaining a video call (please make sure to do a test video call before the day of your exam)
- A web cam and audio set up
- An acceptable form of ID
- A pen and lined paper
- A Smartphone (to submit your answers if you complete them on paper).

In order to get booked in for an extra time exam, you MUST call 020 8135 8868 or email exams@astarequivalency.co.uk to discuss your requirements.
Please be aware:
It may take longer to get booked in for an exam as we verify your evidence of extra time.
Due to the extended nature of an extra time exam and invigilator availability, it is not possible to sit these exams in every available exam slot.
