Functional Skills Maths Level 2 Online Exam
Is the level 2 maths exam online?
The functional skills level 2 maths exam is fully online, with remote invigilation. This means exams can be sat from the comfort of your own home, using your PC or laptop, with the invigilator monitoring via your webcam, to ensure exam conditions are maintained.

Will the level 2 qualification be accepted?
All of our functional skills exams are Ofqual regulated, meaning they are government approved and should be accepted by the majority of universities, apprenticeship providers, and employers. We work with Open Awards and City & Guilds to deliver the exams. The functional skills maths exam is equivalent to a grade 4, or C, at GCSE level, which is a pass.
Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for this functional skills level 2 maths exam. If you require reasonable adjustment, then please allow 20 working days for this to be applied to your exam.
Technical Setup
To sit the exam online, you will need the following:
- PC or Laptop - Microsoft Windows or Mac.
- Microphone and webcam, either built in or external. These need to be setup and tested to be working.
- Strong enough Wi-Fi connection. Minimum requirement of 1 Mbps upload and 10 Mbps download. We do not allow hotspots or mobile data.
- The Zoom desktop app needs to be downloaded and installed, and tested to be working.
Exam day setup
On the exam day, you will need to be setup in a quiet room, without the possibility of being disturbed. You will need to show a valid form of ID. You are allowed a calculator for the calculator section of the maths exam.
When can I take the exam?
Our functional skills exams can be taken year round, at multiple timeslots throughout the day, 6 days a week including Saturdays.
When will I receive my certificate?
Digital certificates are provided within 24 hours of your results, with paper certificates following in the post.
Exam Boards
We work with 2 exam boards to deliver our functional skills maths exams: Open Awards and City & Guilds. We typically recommend Open Awards, since they provide a smoother experience and faster results turnaround. However, if you would prefer City & Guilds, then let us know and we can accommodate this.
Why take a maths level 2 functional skills exam?
We recommend taking a maths level 2 functional skills exam if you require a level 2 qualification, or a GCSE grade 4 (or C). The maths level 2 qualification can be used instead of a full GCSE to get onto courses and to pass onto employers.
Is functional skills better than GCSE?
The Functional Skills maths level 2 qualification is seen as a much more accessible qualification than a GCSE, as there is less content to learn than a full GCSE, the questions tend to be based on real world applications, and the exams can be sat year round, instead of just in Summer and November like a full GCSE.
What can I do with a level 2 qualification in maths?
Getting your level 2 qualification in maths can open lots of doors for you across a wide range of occupations and courses. The main learners we support are looking to go into an apprenticeship course, to university, or improve their job prospects.
Using Numbers
This section consists of the building blocks of maths, with calculations involving decimals, fractions and percentages.
Common Measures, Shape and Space
This section expands on the skills learnt in Using Numbers and applies them to real world scenarios, with topics such as ratio, compound growth and volumes of 3D shapes.
Handling Information and Data
This section tests your understanding of data, including topics such finding the mean, probability, and interpreting scatter graphs.

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 Online Exam can be taken from home, at a time convenient for you, as long as you have a computer setup and a strong enough internet connection. You can choose the option with the online course, or select to purchase the functional skills maths level 2 exam only.

Our Functional Skills Maths Level 2 qualification is Ofqual regulated and government approved. Therefore, it is an official qualification, and recognised as equivalent to a level 2 qualification in maths, or a GCSE grade 4 or C. Universities, colleges, and employers in the UK recognise this qualification as a GCSE equivalent.

Purchased the functional skills maths level 2 exam only. I am very happy overall with the service I received and the exam itself is very similar to the revision past papers that helps out a lot. Going through an apprenticeship and needed my maths to complete it but college kept cancelling exams due to the pandemic. Signed up with MME and took the exam within 2 weeks, passed and received certs in the post! Apprenticeship is now complete, can’t thank them enough +++++++++++++
The exam was easy to set up and explained well by the invigilator. Room was checked to ensure the exam was done in a controlled manor. Prior to the exam I used the free study materials which were a great help and really helped me understand the topics. If money is not an issue I think I would recommend paying for the rest of the materials as they are very good including the past paper practices. I need to wait 16 days for my results now so keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 I won’t need to resit.
Would highly recommend, I now have a pass in Maths to go off and study nursing ! I took my exam on a Tuesday and then got my results back on Friday . Highly recommend

I don’t know yet if I passed but I found the material largely good and useful and the exam price was the most competitive I could find. I think doing it paper based does have advantages because I didn’t particularly enjoy the actual exam experience of having to type on the computer but it was good enough and this was outweighed by the benefits of being able to do it from home.
