Exam Day Setup

For your Functional Skills Maths and English exams, you should be in a room where you will be undisturbed, and be setup beforehand, as well as providing a valid form of ID.

Technical Setup

To sit the Level 2 Maths and English exams online, you will need:

• PC or Laptop - Windows or Mac.
• A built-in or external webcam and microphone, set up and tested before entering the exam.
• A Wi-Fi connection meeting the criteria: A minimum of 10 Mbps download speed, and a minimum of 1 Mbps upload speed. The use of mobile data or hotspots is not permitted.
• The zoom app on desktop, which should be installed and tested and before the exam begins.

Entry Requirements

For these Functional Skills Level 2 Exams, there are no entry requirements. Please allow 20 working days if you require reasonable adjustments after notifying us, to apply them to your examination.

When will I receive my certificate?

24 hours after receiving your Functional Skills Maths and English results, Digital and Paper certificates will be provided, the paper certificates will shortly arrive by post.

When can the exams be taken?

The Functional Skills Level 2 online exams can be taken 6 days a week, with different time slots per day, matching your schedule, any time in the year.

Which Exam Boards are used?

We work alongside Open Awards and City & Guilds to deliver our Functional Skills Maths and English Exams. For a smoother and faster experience, we typically recommend Open Awards. If however, City & Guilds is your preferred choice of board, this can be accommodated by informing us of this.

Why should I take a Functional Skills Level 2 Exam?

The Level 2 Maths and English Qualifications can be used instead of a GCSE, as it is equivalent to a Grade 4, or C, allowing you to gain access to University Courses, improve career prospects, as well as get on to Apprenticeships.

Is Functional Skills better than GCSE?

The qualification from your Functional Skills Level 2 Exam is seen as a much more accessible qualification when compared to a GCSE, while having less content to learn than a standard full GCSE. Furthermore, the exams can be sat all year round, whereas GCSEs can only be sat in certain time periods. The Level 2 Maths and English Exam questions are also based upon real world application and scenarios, which can make their content and questions easier to understand due to their relatability.

This section develops your knowledge of the core foundations of Maths, including calculations with decimals, fractions, as well as percentages.

Common Measures, Shape and Space - Maths

Expanding on the skills acquired in the first section, this section applies that knowledge to real-world scenarios, including topics such as Volumes of 3D Shapes, Compound Growth, and proportion.

Handling Information and Data - Maths

Writing - English

Reading - English

This section tests your ability to analyse various texts, focusing on their language, structure, and presentational features, while comparing multiple sources.

Speaking, listening and communication - English

Here, you will learn everything you need to prepare you for your SLC exam. In the exam, you will be evaluated in a group with other learners via a video call. This part of the assessment measures your ability to communicate effectively, as well as your speaking and listening skills, which will be monitored by an invigilator during the call.
