We recommend that you have a minimum of a grade 4/C in GCSE Physics and Mathematics before taking the A Level Physics exam.
Can I resit A Level Physics?
If you failed your A level Physics exam the first time around or want to improve your grade, you can take your A level Physics resit with our partner, Pass A Level.
Exam Day Setup
You will take your A Level Physics exam in person at an examination centre near you. The A Level physics exam will be in a paper-based format. For any learners who require the practical component, this will be taken at an earlier date to the exam. Once you book, the Pass A Level team will confirm everything with you so you are fully prepared for your exam and any practicals you wish to take.
Should I take an A Level Physics qualification?
Passing your A Level Physics qualification can open up many career pathways, include those related to medicine and engineering. Often, students take A Levels to move on to further education, hoping to reach a minimum number of UCAS points. Completing an A Level Physics exam is worth up to 56 UCAS points, depending on your grade. To complete the full qualification, you will need to have passed both the exam and practical components.
What is the process like to register for the A Level Physics Exam?
- Register for your A Level Physics exam above, or fill out the form below and one of the members of the exam team will be in touch. Aim to book your exam at least 6 months before the exams are due to take place (around December).
- After you have purchased your exam you will receive a confirmation invoice in your email. The exams processing team will gather some further information from you.
- You’ll then be booked in as an A level Physics private candidate at your local examination centre. If you’ve chosen to complete your practicals, the Pass A Level team will be in touch to arrange these for you at a time suitable. If you decide to not book your practical assessments with Pass A Level, you will need to complete the practical assessments somewhere else to complete your A Level qualification.
- The Pass A Level team will confirm all the full information with you well before your exam day, including the date, time, and location of your exams, so that you are ready and well prepared.

When can I take my A Level Physics exam?
A level Physics exams take place in the summer of each year, usually across May and June. Results day for A level exams is normally at the end of August, but this will be confirmed by the government at a later date.
What do I need to pass the qualification?
To gain your A Level Physics qualification with AQA, you will need to pass your exams, split across 3 exams, and the practical endorsement, which needs to be taken before the exams. You will need to source a centre and book your practicals directly with them if you do not book the practical assessment with Pass A Level.

The AQA A Level Physics qualification builds on the foundations of GCSE Physics and Combined Science. It is recommended that you have achieved at least a grade 4 or C at GCSE, particularly with a strong grasp of mathematics, to support your progression at A Level. This is not a formal entry requirement, and the AQA A Level Physics exam is open to all learners, including private candidates and those returning to education.

The Edexcel A Level Physics qualification builds on the knowledge and skills developed at GCSE Physics or Combined Science. What is required to pass my A level Physics qualification?
Your A Level Physics qualification is made up of 3 different papers, alongside 12 practical assessments, all of which you need to pass to gain your A Level qualification. You need to complete each practical assessment before the exams and in the same academic year. You can book your practical assessments through our partner Pass A Level as well as the exam.
Are there any requirements for the A level Physics qualification?
We recommend that you first obtain minimum grades of 4/C in GCSE Physics and Mathematics (or equivalent).
Is this the same A level Physics qualification that I would get in school or college?
The Pass A Level Physics exam and those sat by schools and colleges are the same. Upon successful completion of your exam, you will receive the same qualification as you would have if you had sat your A Level Physics exam at a school or college.
Where will I take my A Level Physics exam?
Pass A Level will book your A Level Physics exam at an examination centre near to you. You will be expected to complete the exam in person and under exam conditions.
