When can I take my A Level Biology exam?

Paper 1

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Marks Available: 91
  • Weighting: 35% of A Level
  • What’s Assessed: any content from topics 1-4 of the specification, including relevant practical skills
  • Question Format: 76 marks of a mixture of short and long answer questions, and 15 marks of extended response questions

Paper 2

  • Type: written exam
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Marks Available: 91
  • Weighting: 35% of A Level
  • What’s Assessed: any content from topics 5-8 of the specification, including relevant practical skills
  • Question Format: 76 marks of a mixture of short and long answer questions, and one 15 mark comprehensive question

Paper 3

  • Type: written exam
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Marks Available: 78
  • Weighting: 30% of A Level
  • What’s Assessed: any content and any practical skills
  • Question Format: 38 marks of structured questions, including practical techniques, 15 marks on critical analysis of given experimental data, and 25 marks on one essay from a choice of two titles

Practical Assessment

The practical assessments are taken place between October and April (not including December). These must attended prior to sitting your exams, and must be attended in the same academic year. The practical assessment consists of three full practical days, preceded by a compulsory lab experience day.

If you want to take this exam we recommend that you have attained at least a grade 4/C in both your Mathematics and Biology GCSEs.

To successfully achieve your A Level Biology qualification you need to do two things. You have to pass the exam, which consists of 3 different papers. Prior to the exam you must also pass the practical assessments, you must take these in the same academic year as you sit your exam. You can register for both the exam and the practical assessments through us, and we will handle all the arrangements for you.

Once you have registered to take your A Level Biology exam a member of our team will book you in at a nearby exam centre. Your exam will be in person.

Whilst the exact dates of the next exams are currently unknown we do know that A Level exams always take place in the summer of each year, usually in May or June.
